Stainless Steel Mechanical Polishing & Oxygen Cleaning

Stainless steel combines desirable mechanical properties with proven corrosion resistance. Stainless steel mechanical polishing is often chosen for applications within harsh environments. Published data is available to verify the performance of specific alloys within specific environments. Despite being used within appropriate environments, stainless steels may and do fail by corrosion.

cb materials stainless steel 1All stainless steels are iron-based alloys (minimum 50% iron) and have at least 10.5% chromium. The chromium content is the key to stainless steel's basic corrosion resistance. When the chromium is exposed to oxygen, it spontaneously forms a passive oxide layer. This passive oxide layer is very thin, yet it prevents further diffusion of oxygen into the base material and thus prevents corrosion. Stainless steel electropolishing can be used to improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steel by enhancing the thickness and the properties of this passive oxide film. Further details can be found in our discussion of electropolishing stainless steel and other metals.

The corrosion resistance of stainless steel may also be improved by passivating the surface.

Harrison Electropolishing can mechanically polish stainless steels and certify a finish as low as 4 Ra micro-inch.

Harrison Electropolishing can oxygen clean and chemical clean a wide range of stainless steel components.

Harrison Electro Polishing, the Leading Electropolishing, Passivation, Oxygen Cleaning & Mechanical Polishing Company World Wide.

Electropolishing is an electrochemical process by which surface material is removed by anodic dissolution. Electropolishing removes surface material, beginning with the high points within the microscopic surface texture. By removing these points, the electropolishing process will improve the surface finish of a metal such as stainless steel, nickel, and Hastelloy, leaving a smoother and more reflective surface. Common parts and components electropolished include tanks, piping, fittings, rods, discs, large parts & surfaces, and more.
